Admission and Qualification

Admission

Students funded directly by the TRR146 are automatically admitted to the IRTG. External students can apply for admission by presenting a CV and a one-page project plan to the TRR146 Office where they explain how their project fits TRR146 topics. The application will be evaluated by the PIs of the IRTG. We anticipate that workshop and conference travel funding for admitted external students will be limited and accessible only upon application.

Qualification plan

The most important training element of the IRTG is the research on the project, assisted by efficient supervision . In addition, the integrated training group serves as a mean to provide students and young postdoctoral researchers with the training required for working within the CRC-TR. The training is made necessary by the interdisciplinary nature of the CRC-TR, where chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science are intertwined in a non-standard combination, which is usually not fully covered in the standard undergraduate curricula. For this purpose, summer schools, focus seminars, a lecture series and a cycle of student seminars will be organized for the members of the training group. The IRTG serves as an important platform where exchanges and communication between the different members of the CRC-TR are taking place.
In relation to the education of PhD students, the IRTG has a series of specific objectives:

1) Promoting the scientific independence of the doctoral students. Students organize the cycle of seminars, where they present their work and/or invite guests, propose projects for student research assistants, and propose mini-workshops.
2) Inter-faculty collaborations (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer science) enriching the students’ background, getting them used to different scientific languages from other disciplines, and preparing them also for non-academic jobs.
3) Internationalization of the education. The students have the possibility to spend time in a renowned group abroad, financed through the IRTG, where they can accumulate further skills and create/strengthen important scientific relationships for the future.
4) Guiding and forming young talents for a scientific career. The IRTG will help talented members, with a particular attention to women, to build up the basis for a successful scientific career, by providing opportunities for networking, for starting national and international collaborations through visiting guests, and by helping them to improve their visibility through the participation in national and international conferences.
